My "Yamamutt" Project

                  by PerformanceX

objective: take an ordinary old P.O.S. Yamaha Phazer and improve it (so it becomes slightly less of a P.O.S.)

***I am now parting out this sled. Email performancex@usa.com for anything you need.

10/01/04 What I have left: handlebars, steering, front suspension, original rear suspension, tunnel, bulkhead, engine, clutches, airbox, body, misc.

OK, so this is some before pics of my '86 Yamaha Phazer.  Bought it in January 2002 with 5995 miles on it:

The windshield is broken because I rolled it on the trail.  Came around a corner sideways, hit a patch of gravel, and over I went.  You can see that the track has no lugs, and therefore no grip.  I think stock was 1/2" lugs, but with 6000 miles, these are worn down to less than 1/4".  Worthless.

Actually, these aren't absolutely 'before' pics, because right away after I got the sled I replaced one idler wheel, put some new clips on the track, and put on Flex Skis from a 2002 MXZ.  The plastic skis alone made a HUGE improvement in the flotation, handling, and speed of this sled.  Here is one of the heavy original steel skis.  They had rust holes right thru them.  Bad.

Alright, on with the show.  The major component of this project was replacing the stock skid frame with one from a '98 Arctic Cat ZR.  Aside of the mandatory fixing and cleaning (I cleaned up everything, fixed broken brackets, replaced rivets, rebuilt the seat, replaced the windshield) I also put in a 1" riser block, put on a mountain grab bar, painted the pipe, and extended the flap.  However, the engine was good to me the little bit I rode it before all the snow was gone, so I decided not to mess with that this off-season.  O.K., here we go.  Here she is all tore down:

16 years of grime and dirt and cattails under the engine.  This thing was a mess.

THE PIPE---

I forgot to take a pic of the rusty pipe (doh!) before I knocked all the rust off with this thing:

Here's the pipe all painted up:   I used Rustoleum barbeque paint.  Good to 1800 degrees:

And reinstalled in the sled (many weeks later):
